Day 2. Namanga / Lake Manyara / Karatu
We’ll head directly to the Tanzanian border at the town of Namanga. After completing border formalities—with our guide assisting us—we’ll cross into Tanzania. We’ll switch vehicles and guides and set off for Lake Manyara. Once there, we will enter Lake Manyara National Park, where we will go on a safari with a picnic lunch, enjoying the wildlife found in this incredible park and searching for its tree-climbing lions, pink flamingos, and all the other wildlife in this sanctuary. In the late afternoon, we will head to the town of Karatu, located above the Rift Valley, where we will spend the night. Accommodation at Farm of Dreams Lodge, Njia Panda Tented Lodge, or Karatu Tented Lodge.
Day 3. Ngorongoro Crater + Walking Safari in Ngorongoro
After breakfast, we’ll depart early for a full-day excursion inside the Ngorongoro Crater. First, we’ll have the opportunity to go on a walking safari along the crater rim with an armed ranger. We’ll be able to take in the breathtaking panoramic views. Afterward, we’ll descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive. We’ll descend about 700 meters to the floor of the crater, the world’s largest intact caldera. The secret to its charm lies in its overwhelming natural beauty and the abundance of wildlife that calls the crater home. We’ll spend the entire day on safari in this majestic sanctuary of wild beauty. We will explore forested areas inhabited by leopards, monkeys, birds, and all kinds of herbivores; the lake area, where flamingos and hippos abound; and the savanna, where lions hunt for food. We will depart in the afternoon after our safari to the highlands of the Rift Valley, heading to the town of Karatu in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Accommodation at Farm of Dreams Lodge, Njia Panda Tented Lodge, or Karatu Tented Lodge.
Day 4. Karatu/Lake Eyasi/Tribes/Ethical Tourism. Arusha
Early this morning, we’ll have a light breakfast of coffee or tea and head out to Lake Eyasi, also known as the land of the Bushmen. Once there, we’ll be joined by a local guide who will help us translate the Bushmen’s complex language, “CLIC.” We’ll spend time with a family to learn about their culture and traditions, and we’ll even have the opportunity to go hunting with them if we’d like. If we prefer, we can stay with them at their home and help the women with their daily chores. Afterward, we’ll visit another family from the Ndatoga tribe. The Ndatoga are herders in this area and will also share their culture with us. Finally, we’ll watch an ironworker at work, discovering this art form that, though ancient, has endured through the ages.
Next, we’ll head to the unique and multicultural town of Mto Wa Mbu. Once there, we’ll be joined by a local guide, who will take us to visit an elementary school and an orphanage. We’ll continue walking through the village and across banana plantations. We’ll have the chance to watch traditional woodcarvers from the Makonde tribe at work. We’ll visit the local banana beer brewery, and if we’d like, we can sample it. This stop along the way will undoubtedly be a very rewarding experience. Later in the day, we’ll head to Arusha to spend the night. Overnight stay and breakfast at Kibo Palace.
Day 5. Amboseli
After breakfast and packing a picnic, we’ll head to the Namanga border, where we’ll switch vehicles and guides to continue our adventure in Kenya. We’ll continue on to Amboseli, where we’ll go on a safari in the afternoon. If the weather is clear, we’ll be able to see the stunning view of Mount Kilimanjaro—Africa’s highest peak at 5,896 meters—during our safaris. The mountain’s waters feed the seasonal swamps that sustain the animals and birds living in the park. Because of its scenic beauty, this is where photographers wait to capture the classic shot of an elephant or giraffe standing against the backdrop of the snow-capped mountain. Dinner and overnight stay at Kibo Safari Camp.
Day 6. Amboseli
A full day in Amboseli dedicated to morning and afternoon game drives in search of huge herds of elephants, lions, buffalo, and other wildlife. In the afternoon, you’ll head to the Kilimanjaro viewpoint to take in the stunning views and watch the sunset. Meals and accommodations at Kibo Safari Camp.
Day 7. Lake Naivasha
After breakfast, we head straight to Lake Naivasha. We’ll travel through the Rift Valley and its vast scenic viewpoints, arriving around lunchtime. This lake is a combination of volcanic rock and sedimentary deposits. It covers an area of 189 square kilometers. It is home to a population of over 400 species of birds and boasts a large population of hippos. Scenes from the movie “Out of Africa” were filmed in this area. Upon arrival, we’ll enjoy the hotel’s magnificent facilities, gardens, pool, and outdoor areas overlooking the lake, which are teeming with resident wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, and gazelles. A boat safari is included in the afternoon. We’ll be able to see and photograph hippos, fish eagles, and other wildlife closer than ever before. After the boat safari, we’ll disembark on Crescent Island for a beautiful walking safari where you’ll see all kinds of herbivores that live there. After the activities, we’ll return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay at Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge or Naivasha Simba Lodge.
Day 8. Masai Mara
After breakfast, we’ll head to the Masai Mara National Reserve, considered by many to be the world’s best wildlife reserve. Hundreds of thousands of mostly herbivorous animals, along with a wide variety of predators and scavengers, roam freely across its rolling hills and vast grasslands, drawn by the lush pastures and year-round water sources. In the afternoon, we’ll go on a safari through the reserve. Meals and lodging at Mara Maisha Camp, Loyk Mara Luxury Camp, or Basecamp Explorer.
Day 9. Masai Mara + Masai village
A full day dedicated to morning and afternoon game drives. We’ll visit different areas of the Masai Mara, such as Paradise Plain, Meta Plains, Burrungant Plain, and other safari areas. Our guide will keep a close eye out for vultures circling overhead, as they can signal the presence of predators feeding on recent kills. There is an optional opportunity, at no additional cost, to enjoy a picnic lunch on the savanna to fully experience the savanna. The tour includes a visit to a Masai village. Accommodation at Loyk Mara Luxury Camp, Base Camp Explorer, or Mara Maisha Camp.
