Day 2. Samburu

After breakfast, we’ll depart for the Buffalo Springs and Samburu reserves in the region of the same name, where the arid, desert-like lands of northern Kenya begin. We will travel through the territory of the Kikuyu, the country’s largest tribe, circling Mount Kenya—the dwelling place of their God and the second-highest peak in Africa. We will cross the equator. Arrival before lunch. In the afternoon, we will go on our first safari in the reserve. Full board at the Samburu Simba Lodge.

Day 3. Samburu & Shaba Area and Buffalo

The area comprising the Samburu and Buffalo Springs reserves is one of the most interesting places in Kenya’s Upper Rift Valley. These reserves consist of what the British call “bush.” On this second day in Samburu, after breakfast, we set out early in search of the animals. Along with sunset, this is the best time to see and photograph them, since during the middle of the day they seek shelter in the thickets and forests, making them difficult to locate.

Samburu is home to animals found nowhere else but in this reserve, such as the gerenuk, the Somali ostrich, the reticulated giraffe, and the Beisa oryx, as well as diverse habitats and landscapes that support a wide variety of African wildlife. The reserve is also known for its populations of leopards and lions, as well as elephants and crocodiles. All of this makes Samburu one of the most beautiful and unique reserves in the country.

A full day exploring the area, where you’ll go on morning and afternoon safaris. You’ll have the option to visit a Samburu village one day—the Samburu are warriors related to the Maasai who live in northern Kenya. We’ll see and visit their huts, enjoy their welcome dances, and share experiences with the young warriors, women, and elders regarding their work with livestock and hunting. Full board at the Samburu Simba Lodge.

Day 4. Lake Nakuru

After breakfast in Samburu, we head straight to Lake Nakuru. We’ll arrive in Nakuru in time for lunch and then go on a safari until sunset. We find ourselves in a world-renowned birding paradise where well-known TV networks such as the BBC, CNN, and TVE—to name a few—gather to film the wonderful documentaries we later see on screen. Nakuru is a sanctuary for the white rhinoceros and is home to a wide variety of animals, including lions and leopards, as well as its famous pink flamingos. If the lake level permits, we’ll be able to stroll along the shore and delight our senses with the sounds and colors of the lake and its more than 400 species of birds. Dinner and overnight stay at Lake Nakuru Lodge or Flamingo Hill Tented Camp.

MASAIS

We’ll be able to see their huts, enjoy their welcome dances, and talk with the young warriors, women, and elders about their experiences with livestock and hunting. Along with this visit, we will also take a tour of an African village such as Takek, where we can observe their way of life, visit local shops, and stroll through its unique streets. All meals will be served at Mara Maisha Camp, Basecamp Explorer, Loyk Mara Luxury Camp, or Mara Zebra Plains.

Days 6 and 7: Masai Mara

Full days in the Masai Mara dedicated to morning and afternoon safaris. We’ll visit different areas of the Masai Mara, such as Paradise Plain, Meta Plains, and Burrungant. We’ll visit the Mara River area where the crossings take place, where herbivores pass through during their migration. Our guide will keep a close watch for vultures circling overhead, as they can signal the presence of predators feeding on recent prey. We recommend a picnic day to explore more areas of the savanna (at no additional cost). Accommodations at Mara Maisha Camp, Loyk Mara Luxury Camp, Basecamp Explorer, or Mara Zebra Plains.

Day 8. Lake Naivasha

Breakfast and drive to Lake Naivasha. We will arrive before lunch at the highest lake in the Rift Valley, situated at 1,890 meters. This lake is a combination of volcanic rock and sedimentary deposits. It covers an area of 139 square kilometers. It is home to a population of over 400 species of birds and boasts a large population of hippos. Part of the film “Out of Africa” was shot in this area. We will enjoy the hotel’s magnificent facilities, gardens, pool, and outdoor areas overlooking the lake, which are teeming with resident wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, and gazelles. In the afternoon, a boat safari is included, where you can see hippos, crocodiles, and all kinds of animals. We will disembark and go on a beautiful safari on Crescent Island, located in the middle of the lake, to get a closer look and photograph all kinds of resident wildlife—such as giraffes, zebras, gazelles, wildebeests, warthogs, and birds—from just a few meters away. After our activities, we will return to our hotel. Meals and accommodation at Naivasha Sopa Lodge or Naivasha Simba Lodge.

Day 9. Amboseli

Breakfast in Naivasha. Travel to Amboseli National Park, located beneath Africa’s most famous landmark, Mount Kilimanjaro. The park covers 392 square kilometers and is situated south of Nairobi. If the sky is clear, we’ll be able to see the magnificent view of Mount Kilimanjaro—Africa’s highest peak at 5,896 meters—during our safaris. The mountain’s waters feed the seasonal swamps that sustain the animals and birds living in the park. Because of its scenic beauty, this is where photographers wait to capture the classic shot of an elephant or giraffe standing against the backdrop of the snow-capped mountain. We’ll arrive at the camp for lunch. In the afternoon, we’ll go on a safari until sunset. Meals and accommodation at Kibo Safari
